Can I Write About Someone Else’s Experience? #
Yes, but with care, respect, and honesty.
Many of the most powerful stories are told by witnesses, loved ones, or those left behind. You might be sharing a parent’s journey, honoring a friend’s sacrifice, or preserving the memory of someone who never got to tell their own story.
If you write about someone else, ask yourself:
- Do I have their permission? If they’re still alive, it’s best to talk to them first.
- Am I telling it to honor them, not speak for them? Let their voice shine through when possible.
- Am I being truthful and fair? Your perspective matters, but it should never distort theirs.
We welcome stories told as a spouse, child, friend, or witness. Just let us know your connection, there’s even a field in the form to describe your role. The dropdown menu under Voice has selections like Beloved, Son or Daughter, Spouse, A Friend, etc.
Every voice counts.
Sometimes, your voice may be the only one left to tell what really happened.
